i am a qualified and registered gas engineer in the UK, (employed by British Gas) with 32 yrs experience in domestic gas appliances (central heating, fires, warm air units, water heaters, cookers etc). I mainly do repairs to c/heating boilers. How do my qualifications transfer, do i need to resit various tests.
thanks martin

Hi martin or anyone who should think about coming to work with gas

They wont recognise your experience or your qualifications because the pgdb  think that their system and training is better than the uk or every where else even when it is proved to be lacking

hi I'm ex BG got 11 years experience and just considering when to take the leap. Get your qualifications checked by the PGDB. You will have to undergo a telephone interview to verify you know what you do. General questions on controls and what to check for if installing a fire etc. They should then grant you a temporary license that you apply for once you get a job offer in NZ. You can work all be it under supervision for 2 years. You will then have to take their exams in wellington around $3500 which from what I'm reading on the forum is a bit of a nightmare and a few people have mentioned going to Oz instead!!

good luck

Hi Martin another UK plumber gas engineer here ,if you are thinking of emigrating talk direct to the board but dont be surprised to find you will have to sit registration then there is a wait of 12 calander months before you can sit the next exam if you pass first time that is but dont hold your breath on passing first time the questions just dont relate to the answers it really is a pathetic system run by pencil pushers then there are two more exams minimum before you can go self employed great country run by wannabe s

Honestly mate, The system in place in New Zealand at the moment will probably take somewhere between 4-7 years to get you qualified/running your own business. And if your not in the top 10-20% of New Zealands plumbing brains you will never get there. Go aussie for sure.

If you still want to emigrate to New Zealand even after what you have heard like myself I would suggest you get your qualifications checked by the PGDB as I mentioned in my earlier post. You can look on the seek and trade me websites for any jobs but be prepared to book a flight out to and knock on doors. I have just done that and managed to land myself a job offer so it can pay off. Best of luck

Advise you join the federation as you will need help when it all goes wrong
Please advise all plumbers abroad go to Australia,Nz plumbing is unfair not only to the overseas plumbers but also kiwi plumbers it's just they struggle to earn a good wage and they are scared that if they complain as they will be victimised by the plumbers board
