Smoke Test

-Close all doors and windows in the room containing the flue.
-Introduce some heat into the flue (blow torch)
-Check that the flue is pulling, using a smoke match. If it is, proceed with a smoke pellet. (If it was not pulling and you used a smoke pellet the room would now be full of smoke.)
-Walk the route of the flue, checking for any signs of leakage (don't forget the roof space)

Spillage test

-Light the appliance, set to high and allow it to heat up
-Close all doors and windows in the room
-Apply the spillage test in accordance with the appliance manufacturers instructions
-If there is an y spillage, leave the appliance running for a further 10 minutes and repeat the test.
-If, after a further test, there are still doubts about the appliances ability to clear the combustion products, disconnect the appliance and seek further advice.

Generally a mirror can be used to find spillage around a flue, showing condensation. This can also be seen on windows or even doors.
